The Goodness Found In Waiting

In this fast paced, fast tracked, fast food world that we live in there is a common thread that seems to run through the fabric of the society that we now live in in the 21st century – and that is – we don’t like waiting.

And yet there is a tremendous positive side to waiting that is recorded in the ancient words of the Bible…

‘That is why waiting does not diminish us, any more than waiting diminishes a pregnant mother. We are enlarged in the waiting. We, of course don’t see what is enlarging us. But the longer we wait, the larger we become, and the more joyful our expectancy.’ Romans 8:24,25

There are so many powerful truths found within those verses, but I would like to take a closer look at three parts of that statement as it relates to our daily life.

1. Waiting Does Not Diminish Us

Just because you have a vision for your life, and the years have ticked by with seemingly no evidence of that vision taking place in your life, does not in anyway diminish the vision, or diminish you. Small people are those who have no vision. Big people are visionaries who hang on to that vision, no matter what.

2. We Are Enlarged In The Waiting

I have witnessed the children, or even the adults, who seem to have everything. Some handle it well while others act, no matter their age, like spoilt children. Those who seek the quick fix are never satisfied.

However, those who wait, or who are satisfied to take the longer path of delayed gratification, grow in character and mature in development. And at the same time, when they reach their goal, they own things and things don’t own them. They understand that it is not what they achieve that is of the greatest importance. It is in fact what they have become in the pursuit of those dreams.

3. The Longer We Wait The Larger We Become.

I watched my wife go through the experience of three pregnancies. As each month passed, the larger she became. The excitement grew while our expectation blossomed as we knew that what had been conceived in her womb would ultimately produce three beautiful babies.

The same happens when you have a dream. With each passing moment, as you nurture and care for that dream, it will grow, expand, and ultimately, in its enlarged state, be birthed. But through it all you will have grown and matured, and your capacity for more will have been established as you embark upon the next exciting stage of your wonderful life.
